SAME TIME, EVERY YEAR: IT’S MARCH MADNESS TIME!

SAME TIME, EVERY YEAR – IT’S MARCH MADNESS TIME!

All right, you round ball fans!  It’s time to gear up for another few weeks of March Madness!  Beginning on March 18, with 68 men’s basketball teams involved this year, the final NCAA Men’s Championship Game will be April 7th.  The NCAA Women’s Championship Game will be April 8th.  Chances are, many of you already have your brackets resting right beside the remote, ready and willing to keep up with all the games, both girls and boys!

That gives you just enough time to get your personal protective safety products ready.  If you plan to attend some of the area games, you will need earplugs for sure.  The decibel level gets really loud at those competitions, so be prepared.

Also, a great show of support is your NCAA team favorite hardhat!  Whether at the game, or wearing it to work, what better way to back your team than by sporting a hardhat with their logo?

These basketball teams have been chosen to represent their schools because of their accomplishments on the court.  Several other teams were “on the bubble”, and didn’t get picked.  Chances are they will be showcased on the National Invitational Tournament.  They have all represented their schools well.

The four teams that are lucky enough to make it to the 2014 Men’s and Women’s Final Four are sure to be four of the top teams in the nation. A team has had to win over other excellent teams to even get to this stage of the NCAA Tournament. Making it to the Final Four is a prestigious honor that is only bestowed on the best teams in the country. These teams will feature the best players in the nation, some athletes that will amaze you on the court. Being there in person for this event is the chance to see up to three amazing games in a three-day period.

Safety must be the priority for all players and officials of the games.  Referees must be in good shape in order to keep up with the rapid pace of the game, and also keep things from getting out of hand, in case tempers flare, which sometimes happens.  Trainers are on standby to administer first aid to the players; it takes the combination of all involved to have successful tournaments.

College basketball is one of the most exciting games to witness in person, and catching the women’s game is always a great experience. These female athletes are some of the most impressive players you’ll ever see in any sport, and they often possess better fundamentals than their male counterparts. When you’re there in the stands for a big college basketball game you’ll experience an atmosphere filled with excitement and anticipation. The games played at the Final Four are about as big as it gets, so the excitement in the atmosphere is more electric than usual. That’s why so many people will be clamoring to gain access to the arena for the chance to see a Final Four contests live and in person. It’s all leading up to the National Championship, the pinnacle of the sport, so you’re going to want to be there to see who comes out on top and gets to trim the net!

Good luck to all the teams, and their fans. May all arrive safely for the games, and get back home safely.  Be proud of these youngsters, many who will be playing professionally before we know it.

TOP TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE DOING DIY PROJECTS THIS WINTER (GUEST POST)

DIY is something that most of us will tackle at some point or another around the home. Yet, if not done carefully, it can result in accidents and injuries, and is one of the top reasons for a visit to hospital. With winter in full force, this time of year can pose further challenges for DIY enthusiasts, so read on for some top tips to stay DIY safe this winter.

Always read instructions

There’s always so much to do in the run up to special guests or holidays;  a growing to-do list, you might want to tackle those neglected DIY projects in time for the festive season. However, no matter what DIY job you tackle, always make sure you are fully prepared and equipped with the right tools for the job. Read instructions and understand what needs to be done. Accidents may well occur if you’re in a rush to get things checked off your list.

Let there be light

Natural light levels are low in wintertime, so make sure that you tackle any DIY tasks with sufficient extra lighting. If you can’t see what you’re doing properly, then you may end up banging a nail into your finger, instead of the wall!

Be careful using ladders

No matter what time of year you use ladders, it’s always important to be safe and careful when using them. In winter, using ladders outdoors can pose more of a compromise to safety, especially if your boots are muddy making the steps slippery. Don’t go up a ladder in windy weather, either. If there’s a problem that needs fixing, for instance with your roof, then call a professional out.

Electrical awareness

We’re prone to wetter and windier weather in winter, so if you need to do any DIY work in the garden involving the use of electrical items, make sure that you don’t operate them on a wet day. Electricity and water don’t mix, and could result in a nasty electric shock.

Don’t mess with gas

During winter we are reliant on our boilers to keep us warm and provide hot water. If your boiler conks out on the coldest day of the year, don’t be tempted to tamper around with it, in an effort to get it up and running again. Messing with gas can be very dangerous, especially for the amateur DIYer, so it’s always worth calling out a professional if your boiler does end up letting you down.

Wear protective equipment

Don’t cut corners with any DIY tasks by not protecting yourself. Make sure your eyes, ears, hands or feet are protected for the particular DIY tasks that you are undertaking.

Lifting heavy objects

Many people like to have a makeover or shift furniture around as the different seasons change.  If you need to lift, move or carry anything at home, make sure that you do it safely and don’t cause injury to your back in the process. Get help to carry items, if needs be. The last thing you’ll want is to spend your time laid up in bed with a back injury because you were too impatient to get your DIY tasks done, or didn’t ask for help.

MENTAL SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE (GUEST POST)

Safety in the workplace is paramount. Too often we focus on physical safety. We must not let the emotional and mental safety of our coworkers and employees fall to the wayside. Depending on the workplace, we might need to pay more attention. As much as all companies might want to deny it, some work places are more likely to lead to depression. Flipping burgers, sitting in front of the computer, or burrowing down in a cubicle can be mind-numbingly boring. These types of jobs are repetitive and are often incredibly alienating. One minute blends into another, and another, and another. It’s all too easy to succumb to the black hole of depression. Especially if our personal lives are not what they should be.

Depression in the Workplace

Depression is a serious factor that could affect the safety and productivity of the workplace. It’s so prevalent that we see instances of depression in our situational comedies like Friends and The Office. In “Performance Review” Michael Scott, the self-involved manager, pulls out a suggestion box that hasn’t been touched in a year to impress his boss. One of the first suggestions that he pulls out is “we need better outreach for employees fighting depression.” Michael breezes over this suggestion as a joke. “Nobody in here is suffering from depression,” he says.

Employees Do Suffer From Depression

Studies have shown that up to 6% of employees experience depression every year, so depression is a little more serious than Michael Scott would believe. The episode of the office, as blasé as it is about the topic of depression, demonstrates how we must help employees who are suffering from depression. When Michael asks what joker wrote the suggestion, a coworker supplies the information. “Tom? He worked in accounting up until about a year ago,” she explained. When no one recognized the name, she pantomimes shooting herself. Suicide is a very serious possibility of depression in the workplace.

Beyond the worst case scenario, depression can have other negative effects on the workplace. Depression leads to

  • Aches and pains which could distract employees from giving their best.
  • Easily irritated employees who might complain more often.
  • Unproductivity caused by listlessness. (Studies suggest that around 18 work days are lost each year).
  • An increase in the number of sick days requested. (Studies suggest that around 8 work days are lost each year).

Pin Pointing Cases of Depression

In order to prevent depression or help employees, we must first be able to identify if an employee is suffering from depression. Here is a list of possible symptoms to look out for.

  • Employees seem to carry a pervasive stress, even when doing simple tasks.
  • Vocal self-loathing.
  • Loss of energy.
  • Inability to sleep or oversleeping.
  • Loss of appetite or overeating.
  • Anger.
  • Reckless behavior or an increased dependence on drugs or alcohol.

Helping Employees with Depression

Depression is such a problem because only about 57% of employees suffering from depression seek mental health treatments. While companies and employees cannot forcefully restore employees to mental health, but they can go a long way to ensure that employees receive the help that can put them on the right path. Here are a few suggestions to kick depression out of your office.

  • Encourage employees to visit human resources if they need help personally or they believe a coworker might be depressed.
  • Offer health insurance that cover psychologist, psychiatrist, doctors, and medicine.
  • Have mandatory seminars about depression and how to deal with it.
  • If the work is mind-numbing, drudging, or repetitive, give employees frequent breaks and encourage employees to go off task every once in a while.

As a company or employee, helping others cope with depression may not seem like your business, but it should be. Both companies and employees can benefit from a depression-free workplace. Employees have a more stable place to work. Companies receive more productive, stable, and safe employees.

ACCIDENTS AT WORK KILL EIGHTEEN IRISH FARMERS IN 2013 (GUEST POST)

Thomas Fairclough, with Asons Solicitors, sent this information regarding agricultural accidents.  Farming can be a hazardous job; no matter what part of the world we live in. pb

According to Agriland, statistics from the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) indicate that 18 Irish farmers lost their lives working on their farms in 2013. The HAS also estimates that approximately 2,500 serious farm accidents took place last year. (1)

agriculture-graphic1

The HSA highlighted that a recent study, indicates that farmer’s health is poorer than any other occupational group. (1)

With these statistics in mind, a new Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between Teagasc (The Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority) and the HSA. The document outlines that the organisations will cooperate, in an attempt to promote improved health and safety standards, in Irish Farms. (1)

Martin O’Halloran, Chief Executive Officer, of the Health and Safety Authority said:

“Research carried out by the organisation provides us with a better understanding of what influences people’s behaviour leading to an accident occurring. (1)

“There is a constant need for vigilance on farms in relation to safety and we urge all farmers to take time to assess the risks on their farms and take corrective action. The work of other organisations through the Farm Safety Partnership in promoting health and safety on farms is also acknowledged.” (1)

However, the issues that those employed in Agriculture face, in reference to health and safety is not isolated to Ireland. Fatalities in the farming industry plague most of the United Kingdom and Europe.

agriculture-graphic3Agriculture has one of the worst fatal accident, and occupation ill health records, of any major employment sector. Only construction has a comparable incidence rate of fatal accidents at work. However, there has been a steady decline in fatal accidents in construction, but this is less so for agriculture.

Less than 1.5% of the working population is employed in agriculture, yet the sector is responsible for between 15% and 20% of fatalities to workers each year.

The industry also has a rate of self-reported illness, which is typically higher than the average for all industries.

agriculture-graphic2According to the HSE, in the decade between 1999/2000 and 2008/09, a total of 436 people were killed as a result of agricultural work, and many more have been injured or are suffering from poor health due to their employment. (2)

The fatal injury rate in agriculture for 2010/11, was 8.0 deaths per 100,000 workers. This compares to an average for 9.6 per 100,000 workers from the previous 5 years; the highest of any industrial sector. In agriculture, the area for particular concern is the self-employed workers. (2)

Of the 436 people killed over the past ten years in the UK 56% (245) were self-employed. (3)

1.2% of workers in agriculture and fishing also suffer from long standing health problems, or a disability, caused by an accident at work. 3.2% of workers have been diagnosed with industrial

FOOTBALL ISN’T JUST FUN AND GAMES!

As hundreds of parents and grandparents have done, we have watched our grandson play football since the fourth grade – beginning with flag football.  The love of the game carried him through the rest of his middle school and high school years, finishing this season as a senior.  Fortunately, the only serious injury he received was a concussion in the seventh grade.  From then on, we, as so many others, were concerned that this might happen again.  Thankfully, it didn’t.  He enjoyed the years of playing with his classmates, some of whom had aspirations to play college ball.  High school students may need that scholarship in order to enroll in college and friends and fans alike support them in attaining that goal.  We sometimes don’t realize how many of those youngsters are under pressure to get it.

College teams earn a lot of money for their schools, through ticket sales and college gear, shirts, etc.  Those whose records make them fortunate to make a bowl game will earn even more money for their school.  There is truly a spirit of comradery between team members, playing for the glory of their school, as well as being noticed by pro scouts.

The main attraction in professional sports is, of course, the huge paycheck that they earn.  It is amazing the amount of money that football, basketball, and other pro atheletes make.  Fans buy their gear and pay large sums of money for tickets to see them play in person.  Advertisements on television also draw attention to their team.  By the way, Texas America Safety has all the great team sports hardhats, for wearing to the games and work, to show your support of your favorite team, either professional or NCAA.

The more serious side of playing football, at all levels, but especially professional, is the risk of injury.  In glancing over the NFL Injury List for Week 17, it is amazing the amount of injured players that are questionable to play this week.  Ranging from eye, jaw, collarbone, shoulder, neck, concussion, and chest injuries, the list continues to include wrist, elbow, back, abdomen, finger, hand,  quadriceps, biceps, groin, hamstring, knee, achilles, thigh, ankle, shin, to toe injuries.  Also on the list were those who were not playing because of illness.  It’s easy to see how busy trainers and physicians are, trying to get their players back on the field.

There are many professional players who are now seeing their young sons wanting to play the game.  One pro was on the news the other day, who said at first, he wasn’t going to let him play; however, because the child wanted to play so badly, he would let him.  There was one catch: he would help coach the team.  He stated that it was very important that young players learn the right way to play, in order to avoid those injuries.  Concussions are being scrutinized more than ever, due to the number of past players who suffered numerous concussions, resulting in brain damage.

Protective gear is so important is all sports: whether it is eye protection. knee pads, or padding and helmets, schools owe it to their students to provide the best possible gear to keep their players safe.

We wish all those college teams and professionals who make the play-offs the best of luck, and injury-free games.  They provide much pleasure for fans who love to see them give it their all.

DECEMBER 6TH – NATIONAL MINERS’ DAY!

In 2009, Congress proclaimed that each December 6th would be recognized in remembrance of the 1907 Monongah coal mine disaster, which resulted in the deaths of 362 miners, becoming the worst industrial accident in American history. The Proclamation designates this date ‘in appreciation, honor and remembrance of the accomplishments and sacrifices of the miners of our Nation; and encourages the people of the United States to participate in local and national activities celebrating and honoring the contributions of miners.’  Being unaware of this occasion, I failed to write about this important day; however, we still can ask Americans to appreciate these mine workers everyday, and be aware that December 6th is “National Miners’ Day.” pb
American miners play a much larger role in our lives than most people realize: Raw materials that they extract, such as coal, copper, phosphate, silver, limestone, iron and zinc–ores that are essential components in the products we use every day. Do you know that coal, and the electricity generated by coal power, play prominent roles in our homes, businesses and communities?  The roads we travel are full of gravel, crushed stone, tar, asphalt, road salt and cement – materials produced by miners to make travel safer. Miners also produce rock and mineral products for bridges we build to span canyons and rivers.

Thousands of everyday consumer goods are made with the fundamental materials secured by miners. These range from cosmetics to toothpaste, from cookware and dinnerware to appliances.  Think about the components in electronics that we use every day, such as smartphones, computers, and televisions.  Gold, silver and copper wiring, silicon processing and memory chips, as well as ceramic insulators are essential components in those electronics.  These components are the brought to you by our hard-working miners, who deserve protection on the job from workplace hazards that have killed tens of thousands and injured hundreds of thousands of miners throughout our history.

We are making progress. In 1907, the same year as the Monongah disaster, 3,000 miners died in tragic accidents. Fatalities numbering in the thousands were not uncommon during the first part of the 20th century. These numbers decreased to about 140 in the 1970s due in large part to the passage of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 and the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977. The 1977 Act created the Mine Safety and Health Administration in the U.S. Department of Labor to oversee the safety and health of miners. Thirty-five years later, we have seen the lowest fatality rate in this nation’s history. And, through the “End Black Lung–Act Now” initiative and other occupational health efforts, we are making progress in limiting miners’ exposure to respirable dust and other harmful contaminants. While more needs to be done to prevent death, injury and illness in the nation’s mines, our efforts and collaboration with labor and industry stakeholders are showing positive results.

From the Department of Labor: “We will continue to work hard to send miners home safe and healthy at the end of every shift. On this National Miner’s Day, we honor their contributions and thank them for the sacrifices they have made on behalf of this nation. We hope the American people will join us in commemorating this day of recognition.”

ALL SET FOR KARTING – GET SAFEGUARDED FIRST (GUEST POST)

Many kids and young adults are into karting. Go karts are very popular today. This vehicle has four wheels and is available in different forms and shapes. Some models are motor-less while others are designed to run and compete on extended circuits. There are high-powered models which can be pricey, and if you are shopping around, it is important that you consider safety and your overall budget.

The Yamaha go kart, along with other go kart models are widely available. You can find these vehicles in local and online stores. By simply doing your homework, you can purchase a suitable go kart vehicle that you can use to have fun at amusement parks or at the local neighborhood.

You can find tracks designed for indoor and outdoor use.  Some go karts are available for rent and are commonly called concession or recreational karts.  Driver safety is a major concern, and so the karts usually have sturdy chassis. It is up to you to invest on a go kart without motor or one with electric/4-stroke engine. For the racing kart enthusiasts, there are also 2-stroke engines and 15Hp 4-stroke models.

You have to make sure that you are set for karting. There is a need to safeguard the driver and one way to do this is to invest or rent Yamaha go kart or other quality karts. Once you get involve in go kart racing, you should purchase chest or rib protectors, racing suits, helmets, and neck (foam) protectors. Flipping over happens very frequently and with the protective gear, serious injuries can be avoided.

Most go karts don’t come with a roll bar or seat belt. The riders get thrown out when the kart flips. Safety is a great concern, but you have nothing to worry about as long as you have the required racing kart gear. Never allow a rider to get in the Yamaha go kart without safety gear.

The Yamaha go kart offers a line of powerful engines, along with other well-known brands like Aixro, Biland, and KTM. The go karts have 15 to 48Hp and can run as fast as 11,000 rpm. These karts require proper care and maintenance. If you want a go kart that requires low maintenance, a good option is the electric go-karts. These are usually used indoors or in controlled environments.

Go kart racing is a safe activity, but to ensure the rider’s optimum protection, you have to buy the necessary gears. Though it may seem that these protective gears are additional cost, the money that you are going to spend is nothing compared to the amount that you can save in case an accident happens. The helmets and protective covering will prevent potential serious injuries. Now, you can ride without worries and have fun with family and friends.

Safety should be your main concern when you ride a go kart. The Yamaha go kart is a powerful 4-wheeler, so you have to gear up. Never ride this vehicle without wearing any kind of protection. Enjoy and have fun with a go kart!

SAFETY COMPLIANCE IN THE WORKPLACE: KNOWING THE RULES WHEN WORKING WITH DANGEROUS MACHINERY (GUEST POST)

Compliance with health and safety regulations will not only help protect you, the employer, from liability concerns but will also help keep your workers safe and machines in good working order.

The Workplace Regulations 1992 cover the majority of health and safety issues that can occur in the workplace.  These regulations are split up into three different sections: health, safety and welfare. Each of these sections is especially relevant to a workplace where dangerous machinery is used on a daily basis.

Health

This section relates to ensuring that your workplace isn’t set up in a way that will give your employees health issues in the short or long term.  Referring to specific key areas, here is a rundown of how the regulations apply to working with dangerous machinery:

Ventilation:

When materials are cut noxious gases or fine dust particles are often given off. This can lead to lung problems if your workers are exposed to this without adequate ventilation.   Installing mechanical ventilation will ensure that there is a supply of fresh air. Windows may provide enough ventilation, but well maintained mechanical ventilation will always be more efficient.

Temperature:

Ambient temperature can be affected by machinery running in the workplace. If your workplace doesn’t have air conditioning then temperatures can become too uncomfortable to work in.  Temperature also refers to humidity in the workplace.  Having your workplace at an uncomfortable temperature can lead to stress and loss of concentration. This is especially relevant if your employees are working with machinery as any mistakes can lead to accidents.

Lighting:

Your workspace should be contain adequate lighting. This is especially important for workspaces using machinery. safety precautions should also be in place incase of sudden loss of light. this means that backup systems are a must if sudden loss of light could lead to accidents.

Cleanliness:

Workspaces should be kept clear of rubbish that could pose a tripping hazard or fire risk. Provide an appropriate means of waste disposal and ensure it is removed regularly.

Safety

This second section deals with day to day measures that must be put into place in order to protect the wellbeing of employees. The headings that safety regulations deal with are:

Equipment Maintenance:

Keeping your machinery well maintained will help prevent accidents that arise from faults and breakages. Likewise, keeping your devices such ventilation systems in good order will help prevent complications from arising further down the line.

Floor Traffic:

Keeping the areas of your workplace which encounter high foot traffic clear of tripping hazards is very important. This is especially important for workers who are using machinery as a trip or fall can result in serious accidents.

Windows:

When windows in the workplace are open, they shouldn’t pose as risk to anyone.

Welfare

The welfare aspect of health and safety compliance in the workplace relates directly to the conditions experienced by employees and maintaining their mental and physical health.  Your workplace is only as efficient as the people who are running it, and ensuring your employees are in good health will enable them to focus more and work more efficiently.   This is done by providing suitable sanitation facilities, access to clean water and regular breaks.

By following these guidelines, your workplace will be a safer and more efficient place.

ALL ABOUT PRESCRIPTION SUNGLASSES (GUEST POST)

Sunglasses are made of either non-prescription or prescription lenses that are made darkened to give an ample amount of protection for our eyes against very bright light or even possibly ultraviolet lights. They provide shade to the eyes and protect them from other things such as dust, dirt, or particles in the wind. Glasses Mississauga are mainly made from prescription lenses.

The importance of prescription glasses

Glasses Mississauga are very versatile. They can be used for a number of various outdoor and sports related activities which can range from cycling right to mountain climbing. Often, in outdoors, one can expect plenty of flying debris, high winds, damaging bright visible light and even ultraviolet lights. Prescription sunglasses can protect its wearer from all these things without hindering their vision or comfort of the wearer.

For many years, glasses Mississauga have been made and reinvented to give top- quality vision to its wearer, even in the most extreme conditions. The frames of these glasses are durable, lightweight and flexible, with an anti- slip component which is crucial to the outdoor market. The lenses are coated with special films which provide cover and protection against UV ray, which are very harmful to the eyes.

What to look for

When purchasing new sunglasses, there are many elements that need to be factorised in order to choose the correct pair of glasses. One factor to consider is the type of outdoor activity the individual takes part in. The types of lens, frames etc. all differ in terms of the type of activity.

Lenses are a key factor as they differ from activity to activity. Some lenses are required to be a different colour altogether, for the purpose of giving the wearer a better depth of focus while engaging in the activity.

Lenses can be scratch resistant, dust resistant, water resistant, to protect the wearer from the elements. They can also be shatterproof, lightweight, and impact resistant for a heavier outdoors lifestyle. Special coatings protect these lenses form the elements as well, along with giving the glasses more structural durability.

Colour options for the lenses also help a great deal for the wearer. It affects the amount of visible light that can reach the wearer’s eyes and better defines objects. Red, blue, green, yellow, grey etc. and many more are given as an option for the wearer.

Interchangeable lens frames are also an option for wearers who wish to have one pair of glasses for everything. This gives the wearer the option of removing and switching glasses according to his preference or to adapt to his surrounding environment. Frames are another important factor which adds on to the wearer’s comfort. They can either be worn like normal glasses or have the option of wrap- around frames which give the wearer more ease and freedom in movement.

It is advised to take a good look at the available options before buying the sunglasses of your choice. There are many certified glasses Mississauga companies that cater to these specifications.
